When to Administer an Ultrasound

Ultrasounds are a common diagnostic tool because they are safe and non-invasive. Many vets recommend them as a primary form of diagnosis for a wide range of illnesses and injuries.

Ultrasounds can be used to diagnose:

  • Pregnancy
  • Kidney stones
  • Issues with the gall bladder, urinary bladder, or prostate
  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Uterine infections
  • Pericardial effusion
  • Liver or pancreas disease
  • Blood vessel issues

Because ultrasounds cannot see through air or bone, we may recommend administering both an ultrasound and an x-ray for a comprehensive diagnosis.

How It Works

You may have seen human ultrasounds in person or in the movies. The process is similar for pets! Your pet will stand or lay and will not need to be anesthetized or sedated unless they are particularly nervous or unable to stay still. Your pet’s fur may need to be shaved in the area where we administer the ultrasound. Your vet will wave the ultrasound machine wand over the area, making direct contact with skin. This will produce digital images formed by reflections of ultrasonic waves.

Overall, the process is quick, non-invasive, and pain-free. Most pets are relatively relaxed during the ultrasound. We can review the results of the ultrasound on the same day as your appointment in our in-house laboratory.
